The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) takes a leading role in planning and investing in fisheries research, development and extension (RD&E) to support the ongoing sustainability of our aquatic sectors and ecosystems.
PIEFA and FRDC have developed curriculum-aligned resources to bring Australian fisheries and aquaculture into classrooms. Explore primary and secondary resources spanning wild-caught and aquaculture production, species and regions with a focus on sustainability, biodiversity, innovation and environmental management. Get Hooked… It’s Fun to Fish
Join thousands of school students across NSW who have taken part in the free and engaging NSW Schools Program. The program introduces students to all things fish and aquatic life through the NSW DPI’s Get Hooked… It’s Fun to Fish initiative. It is designed for Stage 2 students and above, including high school students, and is available to schools across New South Wales.
Australian Fish Species Names | Seafood Lesson Plans
Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Fish Names site helps reduce confusion and build consumer confidence in Australia’s seafood industry. With thousands of native and imported species traded locally, many fish have multiple common names, or share names across different species, creating inconsistency in the market.
This resource provides a standardised reference for approximately 4,000 Australian and imported fish species, supporting learning, research and a clearer understanding of Australia’s diverse $4 billion seafood industry.
Fishcare: Ethical & Sustainable Fishing
Fishcare Victoria is a community-based program where trained volunteers educate the public, including school groups, about fishing rules, ethics and sustainable practices. The program promotes stewardship and personal responsibility among recreational fishers, helping to protect fish stocks and aquatic environments for future generations.
Through education on size and catch limits and responsible fishing behaviours, Fishcare supports the long-term health of aquatic ecosystems. Fishing also provides a valuable real-world context for exploring sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Cracking the Code | Aquaculture for Conservation | Saving the Macquarie Perch | Years 7–8
This educational resource invites Year 7-8 students to investigate the environmental, scientific, and technological challenges surrounding the conservation of the Macquarie Perch, an endangered native fish species in the Murray-Darling Basin. Through the lens of aquaculture and habitat restoration, students explore how innovative practices and scientific knowledge are being used to protect biodiversity and restore species in decline.
Sustainable Seafood in Australia | Years 7–10
This suite of nine student worksheets accompanied by interactive videos highlight career prospects, sustainability efforts, and technological advancements in Australia’s aquaculture and wild-catch fishing industries.
These resources include multimedia content, real-world case studies, and differentiated activities tailored for students in Years 7-10. All resources are aligned with version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, focusing on the Design and Technologies and Science learning areas for each year level.
Fisheries | Ag Week Digital Learning Kit
