In collaboration with Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA) has developed a series of curriculum-aligned fact sheets and accompanying learning tasks that explore Australia’s thoroughbred industry. For primary-aged students, the fact sheets can be used to enhance literacy learning and facilitate modelled, shared, guided or independent reading in the classroom.
Each fact sheet includes differentiated worksheets to provide students with hands-on, cross-curricular learning experiences across the Science, Mathematics, Design and Technologies, and English Learning Areas.

(Foundation – Year 4)
This fact sheet explores the external features of thoroughbred horses and how they can be grouped as living organisms, mammals and part of the Equidae family, based on these features. Students explore the unique characteristics of Australian thoroughbreds, comparing them to other horse breeds to understand how specific traits make certain breeds better suited to particular activities and environments.

Students learn about the different stages of the life cycle of thoroughbred horses and consider how the needs of thoroughbreds change as they grow. Students explore how physical characteristics, such as width, height, and number of teeth, change throughout the life cycle. They also learn about the importance of grouping animals by age in the thoroughbred industry to help train, care for them, and meet their needs at the different stages of their lives.

Students learn about the basic needs of thoroughbred horses (air, water, food, shelter, and companionship) and how the places where they live are designed to meet these needs. Through a differentiated maths problem-solving task, students learn about a day in the life of a thoroughbred horse and the different occupations involved in meeting the daily needs of thoroughbred horses.

(Year 4 – 6)
This fact sheet introduces students to the physiological, structural and behavioural adaptations of thoroughbred horses. Students explore how horses’ bodies are suited to movement through various gaits (e.g. walking, trotting, cantering and galloping) and learn about the adaptations that help Australian thoroughbreds to race. Through a hands-on science investigation, students have the opportunity to explore friction and forces, relating this understanding to the impacts of different racetrack surfaces on thoroughbred performance.
