Pollination to Plate – Science and Sustainability in the Horticulture Industry (Secondary)

Developed through collaboration between Hort Innovation and the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA), Pollination to Plate – Science and Sustainability in the Horticulture Industry is a three-lesson learning unit designed for Year 7 – 10 students. Throughout the lessons students explore the science of pollination, the diversity of pollinators in Australia, and their vital role in healthy ecosystems and food production.

Lesson 1 | The Pollination Station: Careers and Sustainable Menu Design

Students will investigate the role of pollinators in the production of horticultural crops and their contribution to human nutrition, food security, and sustainability. They will explore how different pollinator-dependent foods support health by linking these ingredients to the five food groups in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. Through group discussions, interactive activities, and guided research, students will examine a variety of careers that support pollination services in managed environments. Using this knowledge, they will design a healthy three-meal menu featuring pollinated foods and profile a pollination-related career for display at the Pollination Station Café Showcase.

Lesson 2 | The Science of Pollination

Students will investigate pollination as a process in plant reproduction and examine the vital role of pollinators in sustaining both agricultural and natural ecosystems. They will explore flower structure and classify common Australian pollinators using taxonomy and dichotomous keys. Students will research current environmental challenges impacting pollinator populations and analyse the implications of these threats for biodiversity and food production.

Lesson 3 | Managing Pollination Systems in Food Production

Students explore the importance of pollinators for Australia’s food production systems, native ecosystems, and the horticulture industry. They investigate the challenges facing wild and managed pollinators, including environmental challenges, habitat loss, pests, and diseases, and examine the innovative management practices and research strategies used to support pollinator health and improve crop pollination. Through case studies, practical research activities, and a creative promotional campaign, students develop an understanding of how science, industry, and community action work together to secure sustainable pollination services.

The Protecting Pollinators For Australia’s Sustainable Horticulture poster can be printed and displayed in the classroom to reinforce the essential role of pollinators for the social, economic and environmental sustainability of Australia’s horticulture production.
