EDUCATING WITH AUSTRALIAN GRAINS

Founded in 1990, the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s (GRDC) purpose is to invest in research, development and extension to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.

PIEFA, in collaboration with GRDC, have developed a range of educational resources that help schools, families and communities examine Australian grains; explore how grains are farmed; the lifecycle of a grain seed; and, making grain into foods and grain products like bread, pasta and pastry. Each unit is curriculum-aligned and contain:

  • Extension activities

Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC), Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) and Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA) have partnered to create a fantastic, tangible classroom pack that your students will love.

This Kit aims to equip you with hands-on resources and engaging classroom activities to help your students develop an understanding of Australian cropping varieties. Designed with the ScienceDesign and Technologies, and Agricultural student in mind, the Kit provides teachers with lessons, resources and information to support experiential learning about grains, oilseeds and pulses.

This Super Seed Kit is relevant and useful to students from F-12.

What comes in the Super Seed Kit?

  • Twelve vials containing significant agricultural seeds
  • Twelve matching seed packets for student observation, handling and planting experiments
  • Germination dishes and blotting paper

WINTER WHEAT AND SUMMER SUNFLOWERS – FOUNDATION to YEAR 2

Explore the Winter Wheat and Summer Sunflowers resources designed for Foundation to Year 2 students across Design and Technologies, Science, English, and Mathematics learning areas, aligned with version 9 of the Australian Curriculum.

Developed in collaboration by the Grains Research & Development Corporation and the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia, these lessons delve into the characteristics, life cycles, agricultural technologies, and nutritional benefits of products made from these significant Australian crops.

Students engage in practical investigations, observing growth and understanding food production, supported by comprehensive Teacher Guides and Australian imagery. This series enhances skills in observation, critical thinking, and healthy eating, making learning impactful and relatable.

GRDC GRAINS CAREERS | PIEFA FOOD AND FIBRE CARD GAME – YEARS 7 to 10

Explore the GRDC Careers | PIEFA Food & Fibre Card Game, designed for Year 7 to Year 10 students across the Design and Technologies and Science learning areas, aligned with version 9 of the Australian Curriculum. Developed through a collaborative effort between the Grains Research & Development Corporation and the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia, this card game offers an immersive educational experience enriched with instructions and a student worksheet.

The game enables students to uncover the diverse career opportunities within the Australian grains industry. Through engaging gameplay, participants embark on a journey through the Australian grain supply chain, gaining insights enriched with real-life examples of individuals in the various roles that underpin the production and distribution of vital grain products.

AUSTRALIAN GRAINS, OILSEEDS AND PULSES | POSTER

PIEFA and GRDC have developed an informative poster that details the regions across Australia where grains are grown, demonstrating the supply chain from wheat to bread, plus a calendar of operations. It’s a fantastic visual poster that will help to engage students in food and fibre learning. Download the PDF poster here.
