SFIRP | Career Q&A Sessions – Protein Farming Digital Learning Kit

Protein Farming

In the last twenty years there has been an increasing interest in the use of insects and other invertebrates as a source of protein. Hermetia illucens Black Soldier Fly has proven to be very successful in processing waste material, with the larval stages converting it into protein. The use of Black soldier fly and other invertebrates presents a novel approach to sourcing protein for animal feed. Whilst most Western diets do not consider insect protein as a regular part of their diet there is a growing trend for the more adventurous to incorporate and insect protein within western diets. This series of videos discusses farming black soldier fly, discusses research into eating insects and the use of a snail farm as part of a therapeutic care farm.
