National Science Week 2024 – August 10-18!

ACCESS FOOD AND FIBRE SCIENCE WEEK CLASSROOM RESOURCES

Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, National Science Week features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

This years theme – Species Survival – More than just sustainability explores some of the critical challenges impacting Earth’s human, animal and plant habitation, especially here in Australia. We share our island home with more than 200,000 animal species – more than in any other developed nation – and around 24,000 species of native plants, each contributing to our rich biodiversity.

The theme encourages understanding that we’re all part of the big, interconnected web of life. Every creature, from the bees that pollinate our fruit trees to the worms that enrich our soil, plays an essential part. Their survival doesn’t just protect nature’s beauty, it ensures the health of the ecosystems that provide our food, clean water and the air we breathe.

To expand on the Food and ecosystem focused activities in the National Science Week Resource Book, Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia has put together Primary and Secondary Learning Kits which include STEM-based activities for Foundation – Year 12, focusing on food and fibre education. These activities aim to increase student understanding of how healthy ecosystems are crucial to plant cultivation and food security.

DOWNLOADABLE RESOURCE KITS

Access our PDF classroom kits that will set you up to teach science and innovation content relating to food and fibre. There’s one for Primary (covering F-6) and a separate download for Secondary (7-12). These kits give teachers the flexibility to get involved in Science Week activities at a time that suits individual class timetables. The resources are thoughtfully pieced together to provide step-by-step guidance. Lesson materials include informative videos, activities, posters and games to engage your students in their food and fibre learning.
Complete the online form and we’ll email you the PDF resource document.
