Seasonal Variations in Australian Vineyards

The Seasonal Variations in Australian Vineyards resource was developed in collaboration between Wine Australia and Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA), the Seasonal variations in Australian vineyards resource suite supports Year 7–8 students in exploring seasonal changes in vineyard operations throughout a year. Through guided research, targeted case studies, hands-on modelling tasks, this two-lesson unit provides students with an engaging insight into real-world technologies, operations and occupations that optimise grape production and promote sustainability across Australia’s viticulture industry.

An accompanying printable classroom poster showcasing seasonal operations in vineyards is available to download on the resource landing page.

Lesson one: Seasons in Australian Vineyards

Students will understand the impact of Australia’s seasonal variations on vineyard operations and grapevine growth. They will explore how viticulture practices and technologies are adapted to each season to optimise grape quality, manage environmental challenges, and promote sustainability in Australian vineyards. Through collaborative activities, students will develop insights into the various occupations involved in vineyard management and how these roles contribute to the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the Australian wine industry.

Lesson two: Modelling Seasons in a Vineyard

Students will deepen their understanding of seasonal changes in vineyard management by constructing and presenting life-sized grapevine models that represent each season’s growth stages, operations, and associated technologies. Through collaborative model-building and discussion, they will learn how seasonal vineyard practices support grapevine health, sustainable production, and optimal grape quality while exploring the influence of environmental and technological factors on vineyard management.
