Get into Genes – Applications of Biotechnology
Get into Genes – PCR (Yr 12) – Following an introductory presentation, students rotate through four laboratory workstations, gaining experience of techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the use of restriction enzymes, and various means of analysing PCR products including gel electrophoresis. The workshop highlights the application of molecular tools and techniques to improvements in dairy cattle and crop production in the Australian environment.
Get into Genes – DNA (Yr 10) – Following an introductory presentation, students rotate through four laboratory workstations gaining experience of techniques such as DNA extraction, DNA Nanopore sequencing, genotyping and phenotyping. The workshop highlights how DNA is extracted and analysed by Australian researchers to selectively breed farm animals and crops suited to the changing environment.
