Changing conditions in the pig industry
This unit encourages students to examine aspects of pork production and the things that farmers are doing to produc and house their animals ethically, comfortably and more sustainably. Students explore new and existing designs, methods and technologies involved on Australian pig farms to house and produce pigs, manage resources sustainably and adapt to changing conditions. Students are given an insight into ways farmers care for their animals and are designing housing systems using a variety of housing regimes, designed with social and environmental stewardship principles and animal welfare standards in mind. The unit also explores the idea that our primary industries can be part of a future for managing resources sustainably, improving sustainability in farm practices, adapting to climate change and producing quality food products.
